No, really!
If you have a penny or a quarter in your pocket, then you've got the tools to check your tire tread depth and wear. New tires typically arrive with between 10/32" - 11/32" of original depth--2/32" is considered legally unacceptable in most states, and can be extremely dangerous to drive on.
Check out these two easy ways to gauge tire tread depth yourself at home, or on the road.
The Penny Test
- Hold a penny with Lincoln's head facing you
- With the top of his head pointing toward the rubber, insert the penny into the tire tread
- If you can see the full top of his head and hair, your tire tread is not an appropriate depth
The Quarter Test
- Hold a quarter with Washington's head facing you
- With the top of his head pointing toward the rubber, insert the quarter into the tire tread
- If you can see the top of Washington's head, or any space above his head, your tire tread is not an appropriate depth
Still not sure if your tires are rolling the way they should be? Schedule an appointment with our Kahului service center; we can thoroughly inspect all four tires, and recommend a rotation, a wheel alignment, tire repair, or even an appropriate new set of tires if needed.
Your car's tires are your main connection to the road, and if they're overly-worn, or wearing unevenly, that connection can get pretty muddy. Don't let it happen to you.
