Typically, roof racks include three components. They come with mounts to hold the entire system securely to the vehicle. The side rails attach to the mounts while the towers are connected to the rails. This system allows you to tie cargo with four points of contact for optimum stability.
To ensure that whatever you are taking along with you is secure, stretch straps, multiple times if possible, across the cargo and tie them tightly to the roof rack. Don’t forget to go back and test the tension on the straps before driving away with your cargo.
